Bear Down Gym, Then and Now
Bear Down Gym has gone through more than a few transformations since it opened its doors a hundred years ago. Here, learn a little about the gym’s architectural history, as well as the 2013 adaptive reuse efforts that have restored some of the building’s 1920s character while also bringing it meaningfully into the present.

“Dr. Salanave’s Project,” published in 1963, captures lightning striking the University of Arizona campus, photographed through a data gathering camera to measure the intensity of a lightning stroke. Leon Salanave was a research associate at the university’s Institute of Atmospheric Physics from 1959 to 1971. He later published “Lightning and Its Spectrum: An Atlas of Photographs” (University of Arizona Press), a collection of over 100 photographs of lightning flashes and an introduction to the physics of lightning discharges.
